Board Racial Diversity UK: A new era for Trustee Diversity

Board Racial Diversity UK, the successor to the Action for Trustee Racial Diversity UK campaign, proudly announces the formal launch of the charity, following its successful registration with the Charity Commission in November 2024.

The event celebrates six years of impactful work by volunteers and campaigners in raising awareness and driving change to increase racial diversity on charity Boards across England and Wales, setting a new standard for representation and equity. It will also set out Board Racial Diversity UK’s strategy, highlight resources, and share key initiatives aimed at recruiting and retaining 60,000 additional Board members from Black and Asian backgrounds needed to achieve proportional representation in the UK charity sector.
A widening gap in representation

Recent research from the Charity Commission for England and Wales and Pro Bono Economics (now known as ‘PBE’) reveals that the UK needs 60,000 Black and Asian trustees to achieve proportional representation, an increase from the 40,000 originally estimated. This rise follows the growth in the population of people from Black and Asian backgrounds from 14% in 2017 to 17% in 2025, while trustee representation remains stagnant at just 8%. This stark gap underscores the urgent need for systemic change.

“Achieving true diversity requires more than promises and words, it demands intentional, accountable action,” says Malcolm John, Founder of Board Racial Diversity UK. “We are committed to leading this change.”
